For young basketball players who aspire to play like Michael Jordan but are lacking a little in the height department, this story will give them the inspiration they need.
This NBA superstar was not always a 6' 6" giant. In fact, when he was a young boy, Michael was discouraged that he was not tall enough to play with his older brothers at the local basketball court. He begged his Mama to help him grow taller. Her somewhat unorthodox advice was to put salt in his shoes each night. After waiting a few months, Michael measured himself and, to his disappointment, discovered he had not grown even an inch. How could he ever play the game he loved if he was so much smaller than the other boys? Nothing could cheer him up.
After days of moping around the house, Mama asked her husband to speak to young Michael about his dilemma. Dad reminded Michael that hard work and practice is what makes a truly great player. Being tall is only a bonus. This pep talk encouraged Michael to get out there and play with the big boys. His shining moment came later that day when he scored the winning basket for his brothers' team. He was so proud of himself and so was the rest of his family. The heart-to-heart with his Dad made an impact on him.
The co-authors of this book are the superstar's mother and sister who witnessed this real-life story about such a famous athlete. The lesson they convey in this picture book is valuable to all of us.
