A retired architect, Purdy and his wife Janet have lived in the KV area for about 40 years. They have three children, Stephen, Jennifer and Suzanne, and eight grandchildren.He designed the addition to Harry Miller, Lakefield, the addition to Rothesay Park and Hampton High School. An exhibition of his paintings of local artists is at the Saint John Arts Centre until Oct. 31.

• I just finished reading… Edwurd Rutherfurd's The Forest.

• People who make me laugh are… my two brothers and my old golfing buddies.

• At home I cook… porridge every morning and sometimes for my granddaughters when they are here.

• My first job was… shoveling the sidewalk and cutting kindling and breaking coal for my next-door neighbour who was a single lady and worked at the Saint John Library.

• A person I admire is… anyone who has the ability and the aptitude to work with the less fortunate.

• My secret skill is… I don't think I have a secret skill.

• I aspire to… paint as well as I am able.

• My favourite toy as a child was… I was a child during the war and I don't remember anyone having toys although I do remember skates and skis.

• The best part of what I did for a living was… when I worked as an architect it was always enjoyable to see the people enjoy their new building, especially the school students.

• I wish I had… a larger painting studio, although I really enjoy my present place.

• My favourite vacation spot is… I am retired and I am always on vacation so wherever I am is my favourite spot.

• If I could invite three people to dinner, alive or dead, they would be… Velázquez, Manet and Rauschenberg and I would pour the wine and listen.

• If I could have a super power it would be… to fly.

• My favourite thing about the KV valley is… that it is such an enjoyable place to live. Everything is here that we need; the people are very friendly and it is all composed into this beautiful landscape.
