Bus cuts enrage parents

District 6 reduced bus pick-up areas due to cutbacks

A3

Depending on how close you live to your child’s school, your bus service may be scrapped by September.

The news came two weeks ago when District 6 was told by the province to cut $130,000 from its transportation budget. Taking three buses off the road would do just that, and in turn fewer students would be picked up by a yellow school bus next year.

The existing rule is to allow bus service for students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 if they live more than 1.6 kilometres away, but the rule sometimes gets broken. From now on, that rule will be enforced.

Under a new guideline, middle and high school students will only be picked up by a bus if they live 2.4 kilometres or more from the school.

Parents have been livid about the changes, and say forcing their children to walk to school – when many streets have no sidewalks – is insane. The other option is to drive their child to and from school … something that at least one parent said would turn his life upside down.

Change is hard, especially when it involves a major switch to a daily routine. Parents have been rallying to reverse the new rules, but the district seems set in its decision.

The new situation is bound to affect drivers, traffic flow and sidewalk congestion in major areas in the valley. It’s a few months away, but drivers take heed and pay attention to traffic. Get in the habit of slowing down and following road rules. As it stands now, you may have dozens more pedestrians – mostly under the age of 10 – walking to school in a few months.

Telegraph-Journal comes to KV

Hampton Road commuters may have noticed the KV Style office sign has been reworked to include a Telegraph-Journal emblem as well.

Two reporters from the daily newspaper have relocated to this office at 122 Hampton Rd. to report more closely on news in Quispamsis and Rothesay. I also report for the Telegraph-Journal along with my post at KV Style.

Welcome to reporters Andrew McGilligan and Mary-Ellen Saunders!

If the Province can bail out a dead sport like harness racing and a golf course in Moncton why can it insure the safety of our children?
