Get warm in fall outfits

Classic favourites include slouchy sweaters, boots

Fall has arrived.

This beautiful, crisp, cool time of year is my all-time favourite fashion season with tights, boots, a blazer and scarves at the top of my list for must-have fall items.

Depending on how closely you follow trends, items on your fall outfit agenda may include over-the-knee boots, lots of plaid and ripped jeans.

My list is a little less trendy and a little more practical, which allows me to buy quality items that will last longer. By adding trendy accessories, I can stay on budget and still get some fun necklaces, bags and bracelets.

The most important staples I have to have in my closet every fall are at least one variation of the season’s best coat, boot and dress.

Black, white and pink are colours to focus on this season, so incorporating that into fall basics allows you to stay trendy and practical. A simple black dress, a black and white plaid coat and a pink accessory (brooch, thick necklace or fabric scarf) can make a statement with little effort and the items remain versatile.

Slouchy sweaters are huge for fall and it seems that heavy cardigans have replaced jackets in these early days of the season. It’s still warm enough to get away with a long sweater over skinny jeans and a fitted top or a pencil skirt for the office.

Jewel tones have been popping up in magazines spreads this year and while these aren’t colours I would normally wear, there is something warm about dressing in hues of burgundy and teal as the weather gets cooler. Gold also comes up in this palette.

Other favourites include: ruffles, jumbo purses, blazers and thin tees.

Trends that won’t be part of my wish list this year are metallics, western and boho styles and tattered denim. I like these looks in moderation, but being friendly to my budget means picking and choosing what works for me.

If you want to stay away from seasonal trends but need the fall basics, make sure to include these items on your list: a tailored jacket, fitted white shirt, a classic turtleneck sweater, tall boots and a great bag.

Happy shopping over the harvest season! If you have must-have items to add to my list email me at the address below.
