Appreciating the river in a variety of ways

In our regular Tidbits feature, most participants answer the last question the same way.
It asks the subject what their favourite part of the Kennebecasis Valley is and they usually respond with “the river.”
Whether it is driving along the waterway on a morning commute, sailing along its vast passage or peering out at a commanding view from a riverside home – everyone appreciates the river’s proximity to the valley.
One woman who moved to Darlings Island from South Africa has found the river to be not only a source of inspiration but a method for her to connect her spirituality to her artwork.
Valerie Biebuyck’s recent exhibition, Light Phantasmagorical, boasts a series of photos of the river.
The South African artist couldn’t say enough about the river and its surroundings and how after more than two years in New Brunswick she still revels in its beauty.
“I was amazed at how close nature is and how accessible it is,” she said of her arrival in Canada.
Biebuyck’s exhibition will be shown at Hooper Studios until it comes down late in the day on Nov. 7.
The river photos are not only reflective of Biebuyck’s connection to the land and water, but also show off a unique perspective. It’s common to see photos of the river that are wide, all-encompassing and show the horizon, but almost all of Biebuyck’s images are close-up and detailed and only show a small section of the river’s edge.
“I felt that it expressed what I was seeing, which is the closeness of beauty,” she said.
The images are vibrant and sharp and explore the smallest of features: ripples in the water, patchy red mud, wet strands of grass and picturesque reflections.
Through her artwork, Biebuyck has had her own personal experience with the Kennebecasis River. How have you taken advantage of this natural treasure? Email us at maclean.candice@kvstyle.com to talk about the river’s significance to you.
