Gordie Tentrees plays Vintage on Nov. 3

One of the country’s premier up-and-coming singer/songwriters on the scene from Whitehorse, Gordie Tentrees, plays a not-to-be-missed show at Vintage Bistro & Lounge on Nov. 3 at 8 p.m.
Tentrees is on a long and winding tour of Canada, United States, United Kingdom and Scandinavia in support of his new record Mercy or Sin. As he takes time to go through our musical community we should not take this for granted.
Mercy or Sin is Tentrees’ third album and features his bandmates of seven years, Ken Hermanson and Matt King. The record was produced by Juno award winner Bob Hamilton and is the follow-up to his 2007 release Bottleneck to Wire and his 2004 debut 29 Loads of Freight.
Tentrees has shared the stage with Fred Eaglesmith, Kelly Joe Phelps as well as Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. He’s showcased at high-profile events such as the CBC Saturday Night Blues Show, North American Folk Alliance and SXSW in Austin, Texas.
Here is what the Peterborough Examiner had to say about a recent Tentrees performance: "The concert kicked off with a strong set by Gordie Tentrees, who has been opening for the band (Fred Eaglesmith) on recent dates, and it is apparent to this listener that Tentrees has been working hard in the couple of years since he opened the same venue for Kelly Joe Phelps. His ease and ability on resophonic slide guitar and rack mount harmonica suggest some serious time spent honing his craft; and the inclusion of an electrified stomp board lends authority to his steady tapping left foot. Good tunes with strong vocals and deft fingerpicking make for an enjoyable presentation and the addition of Eaglesmith's sidemen, Mattie Simpson on electric guitar and Luke Stackhouse on string bass, to finish off Tentrees portion of the show was an added treat. Tentrees is a talent on the move and moving in good company."
Fans of Eaglesmith, Phelps and Matt Andersen will love this show. For ticket info, call 832-1212. I suggest you reserve your tickets now for this special evening. Listen and learn more about Tentrees by going to www.tentrees.ca and www.myspace.com/gordietentrees.
There is some wonderful video footage on Tentrees’ Myspace site. The site to sign up for Vintage Bistro’s mailing list is www.vintagebistro.com.
Neil Young's sister, Astrid Young, who is a celebrated singer/songwriter, filmmaker and bestselling author for her book Being Young, has just been confirmed to play Vintage in November.
On Nov. 7, Emm Gryner plays Vintage. Gryner is recognized internationally for her unique voice and "dynamic songs... that overflow with astounding craftsmanship" (according to NOW Magazine).
Nelly Furtado named Gryner's album Science Fair one of her desert island discs in a VH1 interview. David Bowie named Gryner and Godspeed Your Black Emperor his two favourite Canadian acts during a promotional interview for his Reality album. In the November 2006 issue of Q, U2 frontman Bono recognized the track Almighty Love from Gryner's album The Summer of High Hopes as one of six songs he wished he had written from the last 20 years of music. Check Emm out at www.emmgryner.com and www.myspace.com/emmgryner. Show is 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Cover charge is $10 in advance. Call to reserve seating now at 832-1212.
Also Guns N' Roses has just confirmed the band will play Moncton in 2010 in support of their recent album Chinese Democracy. I saw them on their last visit to Saint John and was blown away. For more info go to www.gunsnroses.com.
