The best gift I got while shopping
What do you get when five friends, in one van, go to Portland Christmas shopping for a weekend? For me, I got more than money could ever buy. The best gift I had gotten that weekend was the chance to spend three exhausting, yet energizing days with four of the best friends anyone could ask for.
The gift that makes you beautiful
The season has begun with Saint John’s Santa Claus parade last Saturday and the Valley’s much-anticipated parade coming this weekend. For me it’s a wake-up call that the Christmas shopping season is underway.
How to beat the blues
We're all prone to mood shifts, and it's only natural to feel blue from time to time, especially in the colder, darker months to come. Occasional bouts of sadness may even help us appreciate the good times. In any case, most of us will bounce back within a short time – hours, days, or even a week or two.
Prevention tips for H1N1
To say that most people are concerned and confused about the best preventive strategy for this cold and flu season would be an understatement. Regardless of which side of the vaccine debate you are on, I would recommend everyone incorporate the following “prevention tips” to minimize contracting any of the strong viruses you may be exposed to this season.
Say goodbye to that orangey glow
On our recent trip to Madrid we had a good chuckle on how you could tell the tourists from the residents. With temperatures ranging from 18 C to 25 C the residents were running around in big sweaters, high leather boots and even wooly hats! We were sporting capris, T-shirts and sandals and, of course, toting cameras around our necks.

Informed or in fear?
If you turn on the news or open up the paper, one of two things can happen. You can read the information and feel informed about the news going on in the world or you can read the information and never go outside the house again.
The beauty of Madrid
I am starting this week’s column, sitting in Frankfurt Airport, in transit from Madrid to Toronto. Cathy, one of our senior stylists; Erica, the spa manager; and myself have just spent a great week in Madrid, attending the Madrid European Spa Show. Just soaking up the culture in Madrid was enough on its own. The fashions in the stores and on the streets were gorgeous.
Start protecting your skin and hair
Fall is here. The time has come to start protecting our skin.
As the woodstoves get lit, furnaces get turned on and the heater in your car gets cranked up, our skin starts to suffer.
Slow and easy, the Yin Yoga way
When something becomes a bit too routine it is best to change it up. This is what led me to the discovery of Yin Yoga with Paul Grilley. Previous to this experience, my yoga practice mostly consisted of Power Yoga (also known as Ashtanga Yoga), which is more dynamic or Yang to put it into context.
Soup for body and soul
Is there anything better in autumn than a pot of steaming homemade soup? After raking leaves, taking a chilly evening walk or just finishing a long day, nothing warms the body and comforts the soul like a hot bowl of delicious (and nutritious) soup.
Do you have faith?
Recently I listened to a podcast by Marianne Williamson on having faith. She states that there are no faithless persons. She goes on to say that everyone has faith but what we have faith in, differs. When you think about faith, the first thing that comes to mind for many is religious faith. However, you can have faith in many other aspects of your life.
A rediscovered treatment gem
It was way back in the spring while attending a spa show that I discovered these little wonders. I was at first drawn by the wonderful aroma they were emitting from their small steaming pot in the exhibition booth.
Boost your immunity naturally
Now that cold and flu season is upon us, let’s do a quick inventory of how you are doing. The constant alarmist newscasts regarding pandemics and the controversy (especially amongst health-care professionals) regarding whether one should be required to receive the H1N1 (swine flu) vaccination is enough to suppress anybody’s immune system!
Quality quotes to keep you motivated
I love quotes. Why? They provide a concise point that sometimes helps put life into perspective.
A beautiful day for a wedding (expo)
It is never too early to start planning … your wedding, that is! Last Friday evening the Trade and Convention Centre in Saint John was abuzz.
Maintain health and happiness as busy mom
Last article I spoke about the first few tips on how to maintain your health and happiness as a busy mom.
The silver lining in this year’s makeup
Last week Ross, Erica and I headed to Halifax for the launch of this season’s makeup shades. We were not disappointed. They are beautiful.
Boost your body’s immunity with massage
The last day of summer has passed bringing cooler days of fall and we all know what comes after that: flu season. Now is the time to start building and strengthening your immune system.
Now’s the time to try yoga
In conversation I often hear people say “You teach yoga. I think I need to try it one of these days.” One of these days turns into one of these months and easily turns into one of these decades.
This fall stay hot, hot, hot
On Tuesday evening I decided to do a few minutes work on my laptop. Have you ever encountered time warps? What seemed like half an hour turned out to be three hours.
Worn out or well rested?
Recently I was interviewed on internet radio by Lynne Kenney, The Family Coach. The topic was “Worn Out or Well Rested? Five Things Moms Must Do to Maintain their Health and Sanity.” It was a great interview. Over the next few weeks I will share with you these tips.
How to choose the right skincare for you
Good skin very rarely just happens. It takes a little effort. Although genetics, diet and environmental stressors all factor in, everyone can benefit from using the proper skincare products.
Take nutrition action; try healthy new recipes
By marinating meat, chicken or fish prior to cooking you greatly reduce the amount of harmful compounds that form when you grill. The amount of time the protein is marinated doesn’t seem to matter.
A wise person learns from others’ mistakes
A great book has the power to move, motivate or change lives. One thing I love about my job is that I get to read inspirational books as homework. I often recommend many self-help books to yoga students when they ask me for ways to move forward with their yoga practice.
Hair today, gone tomorrow
Unwanted hair can be a problem. I guess nobody is more aware of this than the male population who has to go through the chore of shaving every day. In the last couple of weeks three of our male spa clients have mentioned skin problems they are having connected to this chore.
