A rediscovered treatment gem

Thai stems were first used to soothe aches in the 14th century

It was way back in the spring while attending a spa show that I discovered these little wonders. I was at first drawn by the wonderful aroma they were emitting from their small steaming pot in the exhibition booth.
I learned the recipe for Thai stems, these treatment gems, has remained virtually unchanged since the 14th century when they were used during Thailand’s Ayutthaya period to help soldiers relieve muscle aches and stress.
Wrapped in the small muslin balls are various beneficial ingredients. Peppermint has a cooling effect on the central nervous system. Ginger is beneficial for the circulation and has a wonderful warming effect on the body. Eucalyptus oil has anti-bacterial and antiviral properties. Lemongrass has a purifying effect on the body.
Before massage with the Thai stems is performed a Lemongrass scrub is applied to purify the skin and remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth and glowing. A relaxing footbath is enjoyed.
After, steamed towels are placed on the back. This feels wonderful.
The Thai stems are now removed from the steamer and, with a rhythmic motion, are applied along the muscles of the back and neck. The combination of the steamed ingredients soothes the muscles and destresses the back.
Warmed kaffir lime oil, mixed with rice bran oil is then drizzled along the spine and gently massaged in, helping alleviate joint stiffness, promote good circulation and restore equilibrium.
This is followed by a foot and leg massage with the Thai stems following the liver meridian line beginning with the left foot and following the body energy’s natural flow.
I think, as the days are becoming cooler, and as we move through fall towards winter, this would be a wonderful treatment to receive. The ginger warms the body and eucalyptus helps boost the immune system.
Just a reminder October is breast cancer awareness month. This terrible disease has touched most of our lives in some way.
Many spas and salons will be promoting specific products this month that when purchased a predetermined percentage is donated directly to this worthwhile cause.
Nail polish, lipsticks and hand cream are just a few of the products that have been made to bring attention to the cause.
What a great time to do some early shopping for Christmas. (They make perfect stocking stuffers!) Together we can make a difference.
