Informed or in fear?

Too much information is putting us in fearful state

A27

If you turn on the news or open up the paper, one of two things can happen. You can read the information and feel informed about the news going on in the world or you can read the information and never go outside the house again.
Although, to be informed is important, I personally think sometimes we have to turn a blind eye to all the information being given. Why? Because it is putting us in such a fearful state of living that we walk around not enjoying the life we have been given.
Now I can create just as much of a fear fest as the next person… however I do catch myself and attempt to pull myself away from all the information that is bombarding our minds and our lives.
H1N1 flu shot: Get it or not to get it? Where to get it? Can we get it? Why can’t we get it? Why did she get it and I can’t get it?
Recession, higher gas prices, bears, coyotes, moose, low Canadian dollar, the cost of energy, murders, accidents, illness, death… and we wonder why people are suffering from depression, anxiety and stress-related diseases?
Don’t you think it is time to put things into perspective? How about filling people’s minds with hope instead of fear, joy instead of depression, peace instead of anxiety? Let’s talk about what’s working instead of what’s not working. How about we spend more time reading about who is going the extra mile in our community instead of who is in the court section? Let’s talk about the victor, not the victim.
Filling our minds with the hard luck, bad luck, no-luck-at-all stories, starts to create an energy that is completely detrimental to our well-being and usually without us even knowing it. Some may say, “Well we can’t hide our heads in the sand” and I say “Why not?” Where is being informed really getting us? Maybe it’s time to turn off the evening news and catch up on some extra sleep instead. Unless, of course, you are going down to the U.S. shopping and you want to know when is the best time to get your money exchanged!
